The Importance Of Proper Hydration

The human body is made up of about 66% water, (some organs are over 90% water) so it’s easy to see why staying hydrated is such a vital part of staying alive and healthy.

Why proper hydration is so important:

  • Regulates body temperature
  • Keeps joints lubricated
  • Helps prevent infections
  • Delivers nutrients and oxygen to cells
  • Helps protect and keep organs functioning properly
  • Helps flush out waste
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Improves cognition
  • Improves mood
  • Keeps hair, skin and nails healthy and growing

Tips for staying hydrated:

  • Invest in a large cup or bottle that you will enjoy drinking from – some people drink more when using a straw, some are motivated by bottles with uplifting quotes or time markers
  • Carry a water bottle with you at all times
  • Eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Add fruit or vegetables to your water
  • Drink milk, fruit juice, tea or coffee (yes, coffee is hydrating! – just limit it to one or two cups)
  • Limit drinks with added sugar (this includes alcohol, energy drinks and “vitamin” waters)
  • Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, as well as before and during each meal

Signs you may not be properly hydrated:

  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue
  • Extreme thirst
  • Lightheadedness
  • Dry mouth
  • Dark or bright yellow urine or urinating very little
  • Constipation
